FAQs » Administrative Template Policy  FAQ Category: Administrative Template Policy

I've loaded some custom ADM files into my GPO but the GP editor tool doesn't seem to show them. I only see the container node on the left, but not the custom policy items on the right?

If your custom ADM populates registry entries that are considered "preferences" rather than policies (see my explanation of Tattooing for more information of the difference) then, by default, the GP Editor will not show the policy items. In order to see them, you have to un-filter them by selecting View, Filtering, and un-checking the box that says, "Only show policy settings that can be fully managed". Note that there is no way to save this filter setting in between GP editor sessions. You have to re-select it each time you enter the GP Editor tool.

Is there a way to use ADM templates to populate registry values under the HKEY_USERS hive?

No, unfortunately, current ADM syntax doesn't support populating HKEY_USERS. However, you can use a round-about approach if you really need to populate these keys using Group Policy. Specifically, you can modify the security options policy area found under Computer Configuration|Windows Settings|Security Settings|Local Options|Security Options. This is described in more detail in the following KB article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;214752
