| Hi,
We have disabled "Display settings" by disabling the control panel from "User\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\ Prohibit Access to the Control Panel" so now users can't get to Display properties by right clicking on desktop and adding Desktop icon, but we want to have "My Computer" shortcut to all users desktop!
So how can we bring it on?
Also is it possible to display the system name on the desktop? hmm... just wondering!
Thanks and regards Ananth.

| Hi Ananth,
One way to get the My Computer icon onto the desktop would be to enforce the Classic Start Menu, via a GPO.
To get the system name on the desktop you can either use a script to change the My Computer icon to contain the name of the system, or easier (in my opinion) is to deploy BGInfo (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897557.aspx). This is a free utility from MS (previously SysInternals) which allows you to display various parameters on the desktop. It does this by capturing the background image, making a duplicate, writing the information you want onto the duplicate, and then setting this duplicate image as the new background. It does this at every user logon on any background, so users can have a custom image or you can stipulate standard company image.
Hope this helps
Andrew

| Thanks Andrew, I'll check that.
We already have a wallpaper policy. But this looks interesting.

| Hi Andrew,
We tested Bginfo, wonderful tool, exactly what we wanted, but....
we were not able to run it silently, we copied the customized file and the exe to client systems startup folder via GPO, it is in computer configuration, but the rest has confused us... can u guide us a little bit more.....
presently the exe opens in client systems and waits for user intervention!! and also it can't write the config file to C:\windows. We are still googling for similar issues and hopefully we can solve it, meanwhile if you have anything to advice.. please do.....
regards Ananth.

| Did you add the /NOLICPROMPT and /SILENT swicthes to the startup script
Also why are you trying to write to c:\windows - aren't you reading the config from a network share? ________________________________________ From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ananth Rajagopal [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 08 February 2009 01:22 To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Fwd: [gptalk] Add "My Computer" shortcut to the desktop

| Hi Ananth,
I'm glad BGInfo is proving useful.
The first thing you need to do is run bginfo.exe and configure it how you want it.
Then save the configuration to a network share using the "Save As" option in BGInfo (should create a .bgi file).
Lastly, in the startup script, put a line that runs bginfo.exe and calls the config (.bgi) file you've saved to the network.
My startup script contains the following line:
"\\servername\BGInfo\Bginfo.exe \\servername\BGInfo\bginfo.config.bgi /silent /nolicprompt /timer:00"
We run the bginfo.exe across the network at logon as it's a tiny app and we're a small organisation with plenty of internal bandwidth. You can run it locally but call a network config instead.
Hope this helps
Andrew
