Hi Derek,

We have a similar problem with mobile laptop users who connect to the network via 3G then VPN. Because no network connection is available on bootup they don't get a home drive mapped to H: via AD.
Instead we've stopped AD mapping a home drive for these users and instead map all their drives (including a H: drive) using GPP. If the GPP drives are set as persistent they still appear on bootup but remain "disconnected" until the user connects their VPN, after that they can use them as normal.

The only problem we've come across is a few isolated cases where GPP drives don't appear unless a network connection is available on boot up. As an interim workaround we've given these odd cases a desktop batch file to run to reconnect drives, but obviously this isn't ideal. Has anyone else seen this?

Sorry, I don't get the ActiveDir list so apologies if this topic has already been closed on there.

Richard.

Ha, didn't realize we had cross-over members but I guess that is a good thing :)

If I understand correctly, the network connection has to be live for the Home Directory to connect when the user logs in. If for whatever reason there is a blip, or the connection is not available, the home directory will not map. It has also been my experience, for a similar reason, that drive mappings done through GPP also do not apply.

I really don't know how else this could be done, but was wondering what others had done when they ran into this scenario if at all.

Derek-
I answered this on the ActiveDir list but wanted to provide the answer here. I guess one thing I should have asked is, what do you mean when you say "is there a better way to map drives without relying on a network connection?". What part of either AD-based drive mapping or GPP drive mapping isn't working?

I have been having this problem quite often lately. We currently have our users map a Q drive through AD as their home directory, and then several other drives using GPP. As far as I am aware, there are no issues with Windows Vista systems.

However, with Windows XP systems, it is becoming more and more of an issue. Most commonly, this is the culprit -

Creating the registry entry seems to assist, although it does slow startup times and it doesn't help the fact that Computer Setting software installations don't run.

Anyone know of a permanent/better way to map drives for users without relying on a network connection? Mapping the drive manually after login works without issue, but obviously inconvenient for the users.
