| Alan,
Disregard this. I was able to make it work. I must not have had the category selected when I tried the F8 key.

Alan,
My Advanced settings seem to work fine. One final question.
Along the same lines of only trying to change one IE setting, I have been trying to set a trusted site under Preferences but that is grayed out. I found where I can do it as a Policy>Internet Explorer Maintenance>Security, but it appears to import all my "Security" settings not just the trusted site I want to add.
Am I still missing something?

Hi Jack,
It's hard to find... I always do a search for "Green". It always struck me as a weird way to enable or disable a setting. I know no other software that requires you to use Function keys. You should be able to right click on the item and enable/disable it.

Ahhh, excellent. Thanks for the clarification. Can I ask, where did you look in the Help to find this?
Jack

Hi Jack,
Yes, it will. All of the settings that have the green ring will appear on the PC exactly as indicated (checked or unchecked). If you select one of the settings say "Allow active content to run in files......" and hit F7, the green circle will turn to red and then the user's machine will no longer change for this setting.
If you want only one setting to be applied, hit F8 (all green circles will go red), select the setting you want and hit F6 (it's circle will go green), then set the value for that setting to whatever you want (checked or unchecked)

Alan,
My concern (which I am having trouble describing) is that when I select say "Allow active content to run in files......" , and uncheck it, will the GPO also enable "Check for publisher's certificate...." , even if the user has it unchecked? Does it set all the preferences as shown under Advanced, or only the one I modified?

Hi jack,
You can enable individual items. It is rather cryptic, but if you look in HELP you will find the following:-
In addition to enabling and disabling preference items within a Group Policy object (GPO), you can individually enable and disable underlined settings or settings preceded by a circle within a preference item.
The underlining or circle of the setting indicates whether it is currently enabled or disabled:
A setting with a solid green underline or a green circle is enabled. The preference extension applies this setting's value to the user or computer.
A setting with a dashed red underline or red circle with a slash is disabled. The preference extension does not apply this setting's value to the user or computer.
You can enable or disable these settings within a preference item by pressing function keys:
F5
Enable all settings on the current tab.
F6
Enable the currently selected setting.
F7
Disable the currently selected setting.
F8
Disable all settings on the current tab.

As an update to this I found under the Help in USER CONFIGURATION > PREFERENCES>CONTROL PANEL SETTINGS>INTERNET SETTINGS, on how to configure an IE7 item........
"Internet Explorer preference items do not provide a selection of actions because the only possible action us Update."
When I pull up the "Advanced" tab and it lists the dozens of settings (some are checked and some are unchecked), does this mean that the only ones I modify will be updated, and the rest will remain untouched, or will the GPO update all the settings listed to what is shown in the window?

I want to use a GPO to change four settings in IE, but I don't want to alter any existing IE browser settings our users may have configured.
My one test seemed to have changed existing user settings causing an uproar.
I would like to set the IE Advanced setting for both HTTP 1.1 settings. I would like to set the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". I would like to set a trusted site.
Is this possible without setting any other existing settings a user may have set? Can these be done as a preference so the user could change it if necessary?
Due to the number of GPO IE possibilities, I have scared myself into total paralysis.
Thanks,
Jack
