| At the bottom of the vista screen near the start button, there is a search object that I need to remove. How can I get rid of this or at least block who has access to it?

| The official name for this item is the Search Box. Using a little google-foo, there doesn't seem to be a way to remove this item through either reg edits or GPO. It's hard-coded into a DLL. The only way I'm seeing to remove it is to switch to classic start menu.

Surprisingly, I don't see a policy to control this in the obvious places (e.g. User Config/Admin Templates/Start Menu & Taskbar). Its possible that its not exposed or I'm just missing it. You might try searching the GP settings spreadsheet for the word "Search" and see all of the settings that relate to the Search feature.

| Upon further investigation I believe that the removal of the search facility only works for Classic style start bars. Which can be set via GP. Is that a route you would consider? Changing the start bar to classic and removing the search within that list?

Ok,
I tried the first regedit, and nothing happened. When I tried the second, I got as far as HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\, but Explorer did not exist as a subkey.
Again, any help you can give youd be greatly appreciated!

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\find Create a new string Value and name it as “LegacyDisable”(without quotes).
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer modify or create a new DWORD value named NoFind and set the value data to 1.
Both will require restart of the machine, once you have tested and confirmed working then an .adm can be created to set this registry change.
Any problems and ill remotely connect to a vista machine and double check the reg.

Dave

| Well, if he wants the newer menu, he’s stuck with the Search Box. That being said, the thing that you CAN do is modify the behavior of the Search Box so that it will not search for files. Doing so will make it so that it will only act as a shortcut means of accessing other start menu items.

But he wants to eliminate the ability to search the machine? Any particular reason? Are you removing search from all other entry points in Windows as well?

The client in question says that he wants to stay with the newer style because it "Looks newer". Nevermind that it is causing me a ton of extra work!
