Hi

Our GPO backups have become a bit of a hotch-potch, with multiple GPO backups in a single directory. The downside of adding all backups to one directory is finding the GPO you need for a restore or import. The single directory is full of GUIDs which are not the GUIDs of the GPOs but appear to be the unique backup GUIDs, so it's not possible to know what GPOs are contained in the backup directory without reading the gpreport.xml of each backup or using the Manage Backup tool in GPMC to expose the names of the GPOs in the folder location. Is there a better way to organize the backups? Is backing up each GPO to a folder named for the backed-up GPO a better way to manage the GPOs?

Regards Gavin

With WinRAR you can create files with the format of YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS or
the mix you want. so I would consider compressing them after the backup
routine runs so I can have save some space and have a better organization.

The line might be a good example.

Hope this helps somehow.

"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\rar.exe" a Z:\archive-%hostname%\gpo-archive.rar
-ag[YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM-SS] -m5 C:\scripts\gpoBackUp\* -df

I personally use a folder name that matches the GPO name, so that automation is easily possible

Thanks - I was thinking that approach had the advantage of making the locations of the backups fairly obvious and as you say, you can automate access to the backups based on the known GPO name.
