Hi,

I have changed some settings in GPO for some client machines (XP/Vista). Some of the clients are updated but few Vista Machines are still showing old settings. Kindly guide how to enable verbose log in Vista & from where to check these logs.

Hi Dhiraj,

The simple answer is you don't need to. By default Vista lists verbose
GP logging within the Event Viewer (go to Event Viewer>Application and
Services Logs>Microsoft>Windows>Group Policy>Operational).

It was discussed here
(http://www.freelists.org/post/gptalk/Enabling-verbose-logging-in-Vista,
8) on the old GPOGuy freelist.

Hope this helps

Andrew

Hi Dhiraj,

I know many on this news group like the event log processing.... but I am
not one of them...

By all means try the log, but if you can't get anywhere, you may like to try
my free utility that you can download from
http://www.sysprosoft.com/index.php?ref=activedir
<http://www.sysprosoft.com/index.php?ref=activedir&f=policyreporter.shtml>
&f=policyreporter.shtml

It has the option to activate verbose logging and then, after you have
reapplied Policy, it will display the log in a more meaningful way.

I would be interested in your feedback on how easy you find the event
logging in resolving your problem.

Are you sure you have scoped the GPO properly to apply to that machine?

Yes, Darren this Vista machine is having correct Computer Policy which I want to apply.

Aside to Alan, I have downloaded your tool & tried enable verbose logs & seen the logs also but unable to find any error/problem. Kindly advice where to check the exact error as the computer policy is not getting updated on some vista client machine.

Hi Dhiraj,

It is hard to say where the problem is because it could be anywhere... If
you like, send me the log with a brief description of what should be
happening and I can have a look at it...

Dhiraj-

Here are a few points to keep in mind if policy is not applying:

-- the computer or user is not properly targeted for the GPO in question
(you can verify this by running a GP Results report from the GPMC)

-- there is a problem on the server side. That is, the GPO in question has
not properly replicated (most likely its SYSVOL portion) to the DC being
used by the clients

-- there is a problem on the client side. This is the biggest category where
problems occur, and can result from any number of reasons, but typically, if
something is wrong with GP processing, it will show itself in the event
logs. As has already been mentioned, Vista includes verbose logging within
the Operational Event Log for Group Policy, but also still includes summary
logging within the Application event log. Therefore, you should at least see
some evidence of the problem there. If not, then the client is not getting
the policy at all and that usually means that one of the first two issues
above is the cause.
