Is this all with the same User Account? With a new account, it should get its settings from the Default Profile, then the registry preference would have to apply, then there'd have to probably be another restart for the GUI to actually react to those settings. You could be opening something that triggers the language bar to be enabled again..........

You can call me a liar. I guess I didn't wait long enough. The language bar came back up... and the settings are now back in the registry. If I force it again it will do the same thing over.

So I guess it is not persisting. Time for a bit more reading to see if preferences are suppose to persist or not.

Wait... it did update the registry entries when I forced an update after the reboot that took place due to installing the updates and client side extensions.

Rebooting again to see if it removed the thing.

Ok... after reboot it is now gone. Logging off and on didn't cause it to disappear.

So basically it went like this:

- install client side extensions
- reboot
- policy did not take effect.
- manually forced it (I think I had to do it because I just installed client side extensions and it was the first reboot).
- the registry changes took place. (I logged off and on, but the language bar was still there).
- So I rebooted and now bar is gone for that user.

My guess is the next user will get the language bar on first login, but will not see it on subsequent logins.

I understand there is a way to unregister a dll to stop it as well (more permanent), but this is good enough for me.

Now I am getting logging and client side extensions are there. Here is an excerpt from the log. I don't see any problems so I don't know why it isn't showing up:

It is XP SP3... BUT... as I am just learning... I didn't realize Client-Side Extensions was part of preferences. Checking now... that would be a negative. Installing now... and learned something new.

Today is GPO crash course day!

I'm also assuming that this is an XP+ Machine and has the Client-Side Extensions installed so Preferences will work?

Found it under

"Computer Configuration / Policies / Administrative Templates / System / Gruop Policy / Logging and Tracing / Configure Registry preference logging and tracing"

Yes... they are not modified. The 3 were not changed and the 1 was not deleted.

The event viewer shows now errors.... "you'll have to enable all logging..." Where do I do that?

Did you pull up 'Regedit' to see of those keys were modified? Check the event viewer and see if there are any errors related to Group Policy Preferences - you'll have to enable all logging of them in a Computer GPO.

Here is what I did.

I created a new test OU called Test User Settings.
I moved my test user into this OU.

I created a new GPO called Language Bar.
I linked this GPO to the Test User Settings OU.

I went into the "User Configuration / Preferences / Windows Settings / Registry" and added 4 items. Here are the details:

Action: Replace
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key Path: Software\Microsoft\CTF\LangBar
Value Name : ShowStatus
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 3

Action: Replace
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key Path: Software\Microsoft\CTF\LangBar
Value Name : ExtraIconsOnMinimized
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0

Action: Replace
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key Path: Software\Microsoft\CTF\MSUTB
Value Name : DontShowCloseLangBarDlg
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 1

Action: Delete
Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Key Path: Software\Microsoft\CTF\MSUTB
Value Name : ShowDeskBand

I rebooted the computer and logged in as the user... but I don't see the change.

I ran a gpupdate /force and it says it updates the user policy and the computer policy, but still no registry change.

What am I doing wrong?

The only other policy in effect is the standard default domain policy (stock) and the firewall policy which is NOT a loopbacked GPO and is only has computer configuration settings in it.

Thanks.

You can probably take a snapshot of the registry to figure out which keys are modified when disabling it, then add that to a Group Policy Preferences GPO.

Ok... I have searched high and low and can't find how you can get rid of the annoying language bar via a GPO.

I can always go to the machine, right click on the icon on the task bar, and get to settings to disable it, but I would like this to be automated. It seems there should be a GPO for this.

Thanks,

Greg
