The GPTalk Mailing List

The GPTALK mailing list is where you can send and receive email related to Windows Group Policy. You must subscribe to the list to send and receive mail from the list. The purpose of the list is to provide a forum for asking and answering technical questions related to Group Policy. Any question is fair game as long as it is related to Windows Group Policy.  The Archives for this list can be found on this page.

Thank you all,

I will try the registry change on one XP SP3 desktop as a test, (all of my XP desktops are SP3), which I'm having trouble with in the next day or so, and will report back with the outcome.

In addition, if that doesn't help you can enable verbose GPSI trace logging as well. I have an ADM on gpoguy.com on the free downloads section that lets you enable this and other logging.

Bob- We had some issues with wireless laptops not getting computer policies even though they were able to logon to the domain without issue. I found this MS article with a registrty entry that fixed the problem for us. My clients use Cisco wireless - I have some older 350 series running at 11Mbps and newer 1130 running at 54Mbps.

The one client I'm having trouble with is the older card -

I did force the wireless to run at 11Mbps instead of automatic, did gpupdate /force and reboot, still getting a message in the event viewer that the client can not contact the domain.

Then I did a flushdns on the client

Also went to both of my DNS servers - checked forward/reverse lookup and the client is in both, on both servers with the correct DHCP address, no stale addresses.

When I also check the rsop.msc I see a red x over the client name, and the property also complains about not finding the domain.

Anyone have an idea why my client is complaining about finding my domain ? The computer is indeed connecting to the domain, and i can not find any DNS problems. Not finding the domain is causing the software to not install.

All assistance is appreciated.

Sometimes I have found that the NIC and switchs dont negotiate speed correctly.

Even though I have used the wait for network setting I have seen some weired results.

Try setting the speed of the NIC to 100 or 1000 rather than auto on the workstations. Then run gpupdate /force and restart.

I'm installing some software via software install - "computer install", not
by user. I have one location, two 2003 SP2 DC's, and the clients are W2k SP4,
and XP SP3.

I found some machines did not install (XP so far), i checked the event
viewer - on one machine it said was unable to access the domain controller -
yet the desktop is connected to my LAN, I can ping DC's, etc... Did gpupdate,
reboot and nothing. I checked the rsop.msc went to computer configuration,
properties, error information and saw --- group policy infrastructure
completed successfully. I can see the software that should be installed in
software install, but --- that computer is still not installing.



then the other computer - no errors in the event viewer, did gpupdate,
reboot and no install. Opened rsop.msc on this machines rsop there are red
x's over the computer name and computer configuration. i drilled down just
like the other until I got to error information from within computer
configuration and got the following error -----

Group Policy Infrastructure failed due to the error listed below.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.

Note: Due to the GP Core failure, none of the other Group Policy components
processed their policy. Consequently, status information for the other
components is not available.

The domain does exist, i can ping my DC's, I'm signed into the LAN, etc...

I also applied the Computer
> Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\
> "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon"

all desktops use DHCP,
I did ipconfig /all and that system, it is pointing to both of my DNS
servers. I checked the forward/reverse on the DNS servers to make sure the
problem client leased address is in both forward/revers on both DNS servers
and they are, no stale addresses associated with the computer name. On the
desktop I also did flush DNS, I can ping both DNS servers.

I did another gpupdate, I reboot the desktop and nothing. I checked the
event viewer and the trouble desktop is still complaining that no domain
controller was found, as per the error ----

Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network.
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Group
Policy processing aborted.
