How do you set GPO's to apply specific times eg: 1 week and then not the next week
In Configure Automatic Updates i see one can choose a specific day of the week for the installation - do you use that?

i.e. I have say 10 DC’s across 5 sites. I set my group policies to auto apply updates to a single DC in each site 1 week and then two weeks later, the other DC’s. That way only half the DC’s in a single site automatically get patched and rebooted during the patching windows. To: gptalk@lists.gpoguy.comAlso, I think anyone with experience patching windows 2008/R2 servers can testify that the ‘configuring updates’ portion on shutdown and reboot can take considerable time! Best to do them staggered I think. From: gptalk-owner@lists.gpoguy.com [mailto:gptalk-owner@lists.gpoguy.com] On Behalf Of Carol M. Chisholm

Subject: RE: [gptalk] Do NOT want servers to auto restart after Windows Updates Well by install manually I mean logon to the server and click on the little icon, and let windows update do the work.I only have about 20 servers, and some are unimportant so can reboot on their own. I like to see the event logs after they reboot before moving on to the next one. From: gptalk-owner@lists.gpoguy.com [gptalk-owner@lists.gpoguy.com] on behalf of Craig Meyer [craigmeyer8@hotmail.com]

So you need to install your updates manually
SURELY, there MUST be a away to automatically install the update and not let the DC's (or specific computers) reboot automatically. Why did MS make this so difficult?

Installing the updates manually is the other option (or pain) obviously.

What do you guys do in terms of this? From: carol@smalldomain.ch

Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2011 08:19:42 +0000My servers are configured so that they download the updates but do not install them (I think that installing the updates and not re-booting is a bad idea since many updates have a pre-and post boot component; I prefer to install and immediately reboot).

Automatic updates immediate installation : Disable
Configure automatic updates : autodownload and notify for install, every day, 03:00
No autorestart for automatic updates installations : enabled

Subject: [gptalk] Do NOT want servers to auto restart after Windows UpdatesHi all

We use WSUS and GPO's to apply Windows Updates. In the Windows Update folder under GPMC we have a few settings enabled via GPO. It is set to install updates on DC's 3am. The "No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations" is enabled.

I see in all the explanations this means that the DC will not reboot when users are LOGGED ON. What will happen is the user is NOT logged on - will the DC reboot or not?

We had this setting on "Disabled" which causes the DC to restart 5min after the update is installed - I do not want the DC's to reboot except when we do it by hand or script

Thanks in advance
Craig
