| Hello Everyone,
We have deployed printers through GP Preferences. We've updated several drivers on our Print Server lately but a lot of times it doesn't look like the clients get the updated driver, or if they do they still somehow old onto some stuff from the old drivers. Is there a way to whack the drivers from a machine using GP? I've tried adding a 'remove all printer shares' to order 1 of the install list, but that has caused more problems than fixed. Thanks!

| Usually it helps to restart the print spooler service if you are unable to remove a driver.

This is mostly on XP Machines. I haven't heard many complaints from Windows 7 Clients......so it may function better on them.
I'll have to give that program a try.
Is there a way to force removal of print drivers on the Print Server? We currently have it running on a Server 2008 machine and if a driver is in use by a printer I can't remove it. And even if I change drivers I still can't remove it sometimes. Pain in the butt....

When an existing driver on a machine for an existing or new printer is detected- depending on the end user permissions or security group membership- they may not get prompted to install the new driver versus keeping the existing driver- if they are doing the printer install manually.
By Default if a new driver is installed or replaced on the server- usually the clients do not pick that up- and even if you add drawers- that is not picked up and requires the reinstall of the printer.
When I run into this (at least for XP and Windows 2003 terminal servers) I use the cleanspl.exe utility from the Windows server 2003 resource kit.
This can be run with switches and computer startup scripts or user logon scripts (your preference) and it will remove all printer drivers, printers and other printer spooler items.

Good luck.

Strange. I don't know if the "update" mechanism actually detects if something in the driver share has been updated-I'm guessing not. What happens if you just modify something in the printer GPP definition when you make the driver updates (e.g. add a space to the description or something that the client detects as a change to the GPP definition). I wonder if that is enough to get the client to download the driver updates. I have a feeling that the GPP client is not that smart however. If the drivers are installed on the client, it simply doesn't try to update them. But give it a try. Darren

Update. I've tried 'Replace' before but if the printer wasn't installed, it didn't install it.
