Hi,

Question about group policy preferences in conjunction with software installation.

Got some software installed via MSI and currently we used a startup script to relocate icons on the start menu / delete Desktop icons for all users.

Now, GPP seems to be able to do this and looks 'cleaner' (am I right here?)

Question: On policy removal do the moved shortcuts then disappear as well?

Thanks

Dave

I've been looking at the GPP now and I have it removing unwanted shortcust from the desktop etc, works well.

What I cannot see a way of doing is moving a Start menu folder from one place to another, e.g. I have a folder call SIL Software which sits on the top level of Programs for All users, I want to move it to Accessories (and all the shortcuts in it). Doesn't seem to be an easy way to do that via the files or shortcuts options (currently use a startup script).

Also when creating a shortcut, it gives me a number of options about where to place it, e.g. start menu, programs, desktop etc. What doesn't seem obvious to me anyway is if I want to place it further down the Start menu tree, there is an option for <Specify Full Path> but I don't seem to see where I can enter the full path.

Can anyone enlighten me please :(

Thanks

Dave

Dave-
I think moving of a folder is going to be tough with GPP out of the box.
You're probably better off using a startup script to do that.

As for the <Specify Full Path> thing, I took that as simply being a
placeholder entry that requires you to choose one of the fixed folder
locations in the dropdown list.

Thanks Darren, do you infer from that that you only can place items in the list supplied rather than elsewhere down the start menu tree?

Dave,

You could try the Copy Files option (source = current menu location, target=new menu location). Best of these are in the All Users Start menu tree. I've disovered that you "can" use the file copy preference to create a folder path during the copy. Try and see if you can make that work on your own...if you can't let me know and I send you the tip. (I don't have it handy right now...)

Then a week or so later, delete the "source" folder using the 'Folders' preference.

(I supposed you could try to combine... but at least use a filter to delete the folder only when a file in the new folder "exists".)

See... preferences allow you to get creative.
