| I apologize in advance if this is a messy question or already asked before, but.
I started using GPP a month or two ago, making all my changes from a Vista SP1 machine. Both domain controllers are currently Windows Server 2003. Very shortly, they will both be upgraded to Windows Server 2008.
I'm trying to retire the machine I did all my edits with, and want to move/migrate what is necessary so I can do it without that machine. On my new machine, if I open up the Group Policy Management, I can see all the GPP's I have set. I'm assuming that they communicated with the DC's and the files are there.
The question is - do I need to move or backup anything from the old Vista machine? I do weekly backups of all my GPO's, but from what I understand the preferences are separate.
If someone would be kind enough to educate me a little bit on how this process works, so I can migrate from the old machine and properly setup the 2008 DC's to "house" the necessary files. I was wondering if this setup would be referred to as the "Central Store" that I have seen tossed around.
Thanks,
Derek

| The GPOs are still actually stored in SYSVOL regardless of what settings you have configured (GPP or other). The Central Store doesn't store the GPOs themselves, rather it is a common repository for ADMX templates so that the Domain Controllers don't unnecessarily store and replicate redundant copies of the ADM files like they did before. Only Vista and Windows 2008 machines can actually see and utilize the Central Store though.
Once you start utilizing a Central Store and doing all of your GP edits from either Vista or Server 2008, you should be able to clean up the redundant ADM files from each GPO. Just make sure you don't blast away any custom/ third-party stuff or at least convert the legacy templates to ADMX. If after doing this you go back and edit a GPO from Windows XP/2003, keep in mind it is going to recreate the ADM folder in the GPO and copy the files again.
