Hi,

I was making a new GPO where I was supposed to configure "Turn Off System
Restore" for Windows XP Clients. I was configuring the changes from Windows
7 RC and noticed that the setting in Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\System Restore\ no longer supports Windows XP, but only
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Why is that? Should I create a
separate GPO with Server 2003 that uses the adm-files, and link it to the
node where I want the setting to effect? What is the best practise, I know
one should limit the amount of GPO's linked to nodes, but I don't see any
other way.

See, this is what happens when you take what a beta OS says as gospel J. In
fact, if you look at the underlying policy within both XP and Win7, they are
indeed the same. Therefore, the problem is within the Supported tag on Win7
RC rather than in the policy. You may want to bug this or if you don't, I
will let the product group know. It may already be fixed in a later build.

I'm only guessing here - but I know recently I had a similar question with
regards to the Windows Firewall. The Firewall for Vista and for XP have
different features available, so, in order to make adjustments - I had to
create a GPO on a XP/Server 2003 box for the XP Firewall settings, and a GPO
on a Vista/Server 2008 box for the Vista firewall requirements. I then used
WMI filters to make sure the GPO applied to the correct machines.

I can only assume that System Restore offers different features in Windows
7/2008 R2, which is why you may be in a similar boat.

Thanks for the info Darren, again. You may report the bug to Microsoft (I
don't know where to report).

Derek: I thought there were different nodes to configure win XP and Vista
Firewall, in the new policies? I mean that you can configure both with the
new policies, but should probably make different GPO's for different OS.
