Hello All,

>From what I understand a Central Store can reside on a Windows 2003
Domain Controller and can be utilized for Windows 7 GPOs created on a
Win 7 PC. Is this correct? The reason I ask is I am tasked to create
group policy for our Windows 7 rollout using Windows Server 2003. This
is because we are also upgrading Exchange and Microsoft has strongly
suggested doing that before upgrading AD to Windows 2008 R2. We are
going from XP to Windows 7 so I have no experience with ADMX and starter
GPOs, etc. I know only what I've read. In my test domain I created a
GPO using inetres.admx. I chose some preliminary settings and saved the
GPO. When I click the settings tab under Administrative Templates for
both the User and Computer config I see this error: 'The adm file
"C:\Windows\Inf\RestrictRemoteClients.adm" is not in a valid format and
must be replaced.' For this particular GPO the computer side is
disabled. This is not an ADM that I created and I do not understand why
this error is listed in the settings. Can anyone enlighten me? This
error also shows up on my basic workstation GPO. These are the only 2 I
have created so far and I get the error in the settings tab for both.
So, 1) I want to be sure that using Windows Server 2003 for the Central
Store is acceptable for creating Windows 7 policy. And 2) If someone
can explain what I'm seeing and point me in the right direction I will
be most grateful.

Thank you for your anticipated help.

Hello Mary

Please don't take offense but I have to ask. You are using a WIN 7 machine
to modify the GP correct? You cannot make any changes to a Vista / WIN 7
2008 GP unless you are on one of those OS's.

Apologies in advance if you are...

Mary-
First off, its totally fine to have the Central Store reside on Server 2003 DCs-since all the "Central Store" is, is a file share. Next, I'm a little confused by what you've done below when you say you've created a GPO with inetres.admx. You can't just copy a single ADMX file to the Central Store. You need to copy all of them, or at least the key ones that support the ADMX you are interested in. Most people just copy all of them and be done with it. If that is what is happening here then that is likely where your errors are coming from. Also, with respect to your ADM file below, ADM files do not get put in the Central Store. You add them to the GPO the way you normally would (right-click on Admin. Templates node) but they still get stored in the SYSVOL part of the GPO.

Darren,

Thanks for the answer on the Central store on 2003 DCs.

All of the admx files were copied to the Central Store. When I say that
I'm using inetres.admx it is just to say that I am creating an IE 8 GPO.
The adm in the error is not in the central store, it is under
c:\windows\inf this is because that is where XP adms are stored on the
Windows 2003 DC. I have not imported it into my policy. That is my
question. Why, when I'm creating an IE 8 policy with the current admx
files does this error show up in the settings tab?

Mary,

There are several KB articles noting this kind of error. However, there appears to have been more to the typical error message than that which you've described so far (at least I hope so). Perform the search below and you'll get several hits noting this kind of behavior. However, without more error detail, the resolution can go in several directions...
