| Deat all, I am wanting to use GPP drive map preference
(please don't ask why !) but the shared resource has spaces in it. !
is it possible to use the drive map preference to work with this . I have tried any number of permutations of quotes, no spaces etc. but no joy !
have tested the GPP processing with a simpler drive map, and all is working so I suspect a vagary of the shared resource having spaces which we got round with logon scripts by enclosing the server and resource in double quotes.
Thanks. G

| Me thinks you have to get rid of the spaces in GPP because windows doesn't recognize the space. I was trying to find documentation on this but usually I have to use an _ if I create something like that or no space at all.

| I use GPP to map to a drive at my head office that contains spaces in the share name.
Here is a screenshot of what I do, it works just fine:

I use GPP to map to a drive at my head office that contains spaces in the share name.
Here is a screenshot of what I do, it works just fine:

Ilene, I think you are right - good old login scripts !

Me thinks you have to get rid of the spaces in GPP because windows doesn't recognize the space. I was trying to find documentation on this but usually I have to use an _ if I create something like that or no space at all.

sharename = bla bla bla server = server2
net use z: \\server2\bla<file:///\\server2\bla> bla bla" - works ok in login script
but the same usage of spaces and quotes does not seem to work in GPP drive map preference
Does this explain ?

Indeed yes, but was wondering if the spaces in sharename is a limitation of GPP ?

From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Turner Sent: Thursday, September 02, 2010 2:36 PM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
Thanks. G

All my XP machines have the GPP CSE's pushed to them via WSUS, so I can assign any GPP to XP machines.

From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Rosner, Ilene Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 9:19 AM To: 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: RE: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
Gotch! I just do it from my DC.
From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andrew McHale Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 9:17 AM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
I configured it using Group Policy Manager on my Win7 admin machine.
All my XP machines have the GPP CSE's pushed to them via WSUS, so I can assign any GPP to XP machines.

So you did that at the server or the client?
From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andrew McHale Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 9:01 AM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
Nope.
It is a 2003 file server in a 2003 FFL. The drive is mapped onto XP & 7 machines

From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Andrew McHale Sent: Friday, September 03, 2010 8:46 AM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
I use GPP to map to a drive at my head office that contains spaces in the share name.
Here is a screenshot of what I do, it works just fine:

Me thinks you have to get rid of the spaces in GPP because windows doesn't recognize the space. I was trying to find documentation on this but usually I have to use an _ if I create something like that or no space at all.
From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Turner Sent: Thursday, September 02, 2010 3:00 PM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
sharename = bla bla bla server = server2
net use z: \\server2\bla<file:///\\server2\bla> bla bla" - works ok in login script
but the same usage of spaces and quotes does not seem to work in GPP drive map preference
Does this explain ?

From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Turner Sent: Thursday, September 02, 2010 2:36 PM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
Thanks. G

| I didn't use any documentation when setting it up. I already had a WSUS implementation in my network so all I did was approve the appropriate GPP Client Side Extensions (CSE) for the workstations I wanted them deployed to.
Here is a screenshot of the updates in WSUS that you need to approve, depending on what platform you want to deploy them to, with the XP one in particular highlighted. Search for them in your WSUS, double click the search result and then it'll take you to the details page for that update, where you can approve it for your domain.

| The package needs installed on just the XP machines you want to be affected by GPP.
Think of GP and GPP as different languages. All windows machines speak GP by default, but if you want them to speak (or more accurately Read) GPP then you need to install the "language pack" called the Group Policy Preferences Client Side Extensions.
Personally I just deployed the GPP CSE's to all machines in my workplace as it was very simple via WSUS and I'd rather have access to GPP than not. If you don't have WSUS then I can imagine it'd be a huge pain in the butt

So you did that at the server or the client?

Nope.
It is a 2003 file server in a 2003 FFL. The drive is mapped onto XP & 7 machines

I use GPP to map to a drive at my head office that contains spaces in the share name.
Here is a screenshot of what I do, it works just fine:

For sure! I use them all the time. Net Use saves me everytime! The only thing I gpp is the user profile in AD.

Ilene, I think you are right - good old login scripts !

Me thinks you have to get rid of the spaces in GPP because windows doesn't recognize the space. I was trying to find documentation on this but usually I have to use an _ if I create something like that or no space at all.

sharename = bla bla bla
server = server2
net use z: \\server2\bla <file:///\\server2\bla> bla bla" - works ok in login script
but the same usage of spaces and quotes does not seem to work in GPP drive map preference
Does this explain ?

Can you give me an example of what you're talking about?

Indeed yes, but was wondering if the spaces in sharename is a limitation of GPP ?

The other way is via AD with profiles you can map there too.

indeed that is what I used previously - was attempting to use the (more technically elegant ?0 GPP

Y not a login script with the net use command?
From: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Graham Turner Sent: Thursday, September 02, 2010 2:36 PM To: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gptalk] gpp preference drive map
Thanks. G
